This gorgeous girl is a Pademelon. When I rescued her and brought her into care she was cold, wet, had hardly any fur and weighed only 148 grams. She had been found on the side of the road, all alone, after her mum had been hit by a car.
She immediately went into the 'Hotbox' (Humidicrib) as she was not old enough to regulate her own body temperature.
In the beginning, her feeding schedule was every four hours 24/7. Given it takes around an hour to feed, carers subsist on only two hours sleep between feeds.
There are a number of Wildlife Rescue Organisations throughout Australia and I am a member of WIRES.
The people who make up WIRES are incredible. Rescues happen all day and through the night. Carers devote their lives to rehabilitating and raising orphaned and sick Wildlife with the ultimate goal of releasing them back into the wild.
Whilst I only care for one Joey at a time, my amazing mentors can have up to sixteen all at various ages and stages.
Birds, Flying Foxes, Reptiles, Small Mammals - if they are injured or need help - there is a WIRES member ready.
This is Puck. He is a Red Necked Wallaby who came into care as a wee tiny little thing. At this stage, I only have the facilities to raise Joeys till they can independently leave and return to their pouches without assistance. At that point, they go to my amazing mentors who take them through the next part of their lives until they are ready for release.
It is always a bittersweet moment saying goodbye.
I have often been asked why I don't clear more of my property to enable me to expand my cropping capabilities.
The answer is simple - Just look at that face.
I believe that I am not the owner of this property - but it's Custodian. I share it with the most amazing variety of birds, Wallabies, Echidnas, Lizards and Lace Monitors, Koalas and all manner of small furry critters. My neighbours have often commented that they did not see this much Wildlife in the area before I moved in. Its as if the animals know that this is a safe haven and their home too.
I will soon be formally registering the farm as a declared Wildlife Refuge with the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage.
