I had spent a lifetime in the Arts world both in Australia and overseas. First as a professional ballet dancer then Artistic Director & Choreographer of a ballet Company and later as the Principal of a classical ballet school in Sydney.
I had always loved nature and 'growing things' however, as my life was conducted inside ballet studios and Theatres, I had limited opportunities to experience these things.
I had always imagined that when I retired I would move to the country. One day I realised that I didn't want to wait till I retired - I wanted to change my life now.
Having decided to do a 'tree change' the search for my perfect property was on.
I had three main requirements. It had to be secluded, have some cleared land for farming and natural bushland.
The first time I drove up the Hoop Pine lined driveway to view this property, I knew I had found it.
A little old farm house tucked in its own secluded valley, some cleared areas all surrounded by natural bush and rain-forest. Perfect.
It has become apparent over the years that the number of young people being diagnosed with cancer is on the increase. This was evident in my own school as more and more parents were undergoing radiation and chemo therapy. I truly believe that is a consequence, in large part, to the food we eat.
I decided then and there that my farm, and the produce I grew on the farm, would be totally chemical free with the ultimate goal of gaining official Organic Certification.
I researched everything I could lay my hands on with regards organic farming, undertook a Permaculture course and gained a Permaculture Design Certificate. Researched the crops I wanted to grow and started designing my farm.
There was one section of the property that was high on the hill, covered in weeds and totally inaccessible.
Perfect for what I wanted.
It was north facing and I didn't mind clearing the land as it was full of Lantana and Privet.
The next part of the plan was to design the access road and Dam sight.
I had a professional undertake the major Earthworks and very quickly I had access to the future cropping area, a 4 gig dam and mini roads around the six separate fields.
I was, by this stage, quite capable on my mini excavator so I dug all the trenches and laid the mainline irrigation myself.
Two months of hard slog de-rocking the ground by hand and I was ready to start using the Rotary Hoe for the first time. I designed and had made equipment that would 'bed' the ground up and designed a planter for sowing the Garlic.
Tellus Ceres Farm is now a reality.
We have harvested our first 2 acre crop of Garlic and I am proud to say that reports on the flavour have been outstanding.
The Ginger & Chillies are coming along well and our first crop of Turmeric and Lemon Grass was wonderful.
Our rescue domestic animals are loving their new lives free from stress, hunger and pain while the tiny Joey's we have cared for have also been given a second chance at life.
